I am trying to find out what the best method of setting small
faceted stones (ex: garnet, peridot, amethyst) into a sterling silver
egg. Most of the stones are 3-4mm wide. I have not been able to
locate any books or articles that give any detail about the various
methods of setting faceted stones and would welcome any advise or
direction.

Dear “RLaneThompson” my humbled opinion would be to “Gypsy” set or
"Flush" set these little blighters! keeping in mind that these
little stones will be very secure and with NO sharp edges to catch
anyones fingers or clothing…my opinion …Gerry, the Cyber-Setter!
Lane: There are many methods of mounting the stones, much depends on
how thick the egg is, favored would be a paved {raised prong, graver
set} style. You could drill holes and solder prongs, or bezels if
you prefer the cleanest look. Ringman John Henry
