Sensitive stones and ultrasonic and steam cleaners

Is there a list available containing the compatibility of gemstones
in the ultrasonic cleaner? I know that emerald, opal and tanzanite
are no-no’s…are there others? What about steam cleaners? Any help
in providing a complete list would be appreciated. Thank You J. Malone

Hello Mallone

I have a book which all the of the most common used
gemstones an how to tread them but … it’s written in
german. It’s called “Umgang mit edlen steinen” written by Eberhard
Schtt and produced by Rhle-Diebener-verlag GmbH & Co.KG,.I paid
about 55,-US$ for the book but I can’t recall howmany times I’ve been
saved by the book. I don’t know if you’re able to get this book in an
english version and I can not provide you with an ISBN number
(International standard book number). I could help you with an german
version, willing to post it to you but that’s all up to you. This is
how far I can provide you with this info you’re looking for.

On the wall of our store’s repair shop is a large chart with this and
more info. Titled “Gemological Guidelines for Gemstone Durability in
Jewelry” It is available from the GIA. There are certain criteria
as to whom they will send it to, I’m not really sure what they are.
These charts are also available from AGS but only for members.
Extremely useful and worth the effort to track them down. Good Luck.
I had to talk to 4 different people in our own store this morning just
to get this much! Hope this helps.
