School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston

Any thoughts on this school in general, or its jewelry program, or
anything else about it for that matter? Thanks.

Hi Bekka,

I live near Boston and attended the Massachusetts College of Art,
located next to the Museum of Fine Arts. In my opinion, there are
better schools than the MFAS in the East for a comprehensive metals
program. I rank them in this order.

  1. Rhode Island School of Design
  2. Mass College of Art
  3. University of Massachusetts Dartmouth
  4. Museum School

If you are looking for a technical certificate, I highly recommend,
North Bennett Street School in Boston.

Good luck,

Jewelry/Metalarts School & Cooperative Studio

I took two SMFA classes with Linda Priest. I did learn a lot. The
classes are definitely fine art/craft-geared as opposed to
fashion-geared (Makes sense since it’s a museum school!)

Now I live in Los Angeles, and I can’t believe how much I paid for
the classes at SMFA, which included minimal studio time. Out here
you can find continuing education in jewelry and metals with much
better facilities and 24/7 studio access at about 1/10 the price.

I guess I would say that it’s only worth taking classes at SMFA if
you are fine-art focused. I’d take a look at what Metalwerx offers
instead.

Good luck!
