Joanna - Another way to get a rust patina on steel is to use chlorine
bleach. This can be done by spraying or immersion. Metal needs to be
scrupulously clean. Note that full strength is very aggresive
(objects left in full strength too long tend to disappear). I am a
long time knifemaker and gunsmith and use this process often to age
pieces used in restoration. I suggest starting out with a diluted mix
and trying different strengths until you find what works for you.
Hope this helps. Am a long time lurker on this list and have taught
myself how to fabricate silver and gold mainly due to information
from many Orchid members. This list is invaluable. Thank you all
