They live there all of the time. I replace the sponges with fresh ones once or twice a year. I also keep an old pillow case on top of our mill when we aren’t using it.
Yes, I also have a cover for it. Thank you for your suggestion with the sponges, it did wonders.
Should there be oil in those sponges?..Rob
I poured a bit of oil on the surface of the sponge that will come in contact with the roller and spread it with the fingers so that it is even. It is not soaked in oil in my case.

Flux glass can definitely damage steel rollers if it’s damp and sticks to them. Eventually you get rusted areas and marks on everything you roll. Debris on rollers is the usual culprit.
