Ring bending

I thought it was legal provided you stamp out the old hallmark,
and have it hallmarked as a new piece. The assay office would
provide guidance.

Yes that is legal. But is it worth the additional hm costs? also in my
view the work is spoiled with the struck out marks. Better perhaps to
fill them with silver hm grade alloy and start from scratch.

The bender from Pepe comes with plastic inserts to protect the
surface of the material. You can always add a layer of thermo plastic
of one brand or another to the steel dies. Be sure you anneal before
you bend.

Well the metal forms, if kept clean, rust free, and aren’t abused
can still scratch a little. The nylon forms would not scratch as
much, but they don’t have the same strength as steel.

Normally when I use a ring bender it’s in the early stages of making
a ring, so I’m going to clean it up anyway.

Hello Jean,

I use a small piece of thin leather, smooth on one side, between the
insert on the bottom and the metal being bent. Using care to keep
the metal oriented straight, and advancing a little at a time works
well for me.

Cut strips of corn flake packets into strips. put between the
silver and the concave part of the tool. Does the job a treat. Tho
am surprised you didnt think of it yourself.

Ted - you mean the inside packet or the box of corn flakes?

Ted - you mean the inside packet or the box of corn flakes?

You make me laugh!!! now as im the teacher in this instance, Im going
to suggest that you try out both, experiment!!

Also ask yourself, what till give the best cushion effect to the
detail on the spoon handle?

thick material or thin?

Let mo know the answer when you have tried it.

Ted
then you will learn more than if I give you the answer.

I have ordered the Pepe ring bender with the inserts. I look forward
to relieving a little of this forearm discomfort. Again, thanks to
all.

BTW Ted- yes of course I use other stuff to protect silver from
marring. I did not know what was the most logical thing to use with
the ring bender. But not to worry, it has something called Devlin
inserts. I think that’s what they’re called.
