Refining 950Palladium

Has anyone researched refining scrap palladium? Will it be
economically viable to refine the metal?

Back when pd was so expensive I found that some refiners didn’t
assay or refine for palladium found in white gold alloys.

A related refining concern is that the price paid for platinum scrap
is usually discounted in addition to the cost of assaying for the
metal. Right now in my studio it’s not a factor because platinum is
costly enough and used in volume that makes the assaying charge
almost irrelevant and the discount just annoying.

Those of us considering using Pd will need to adjust pricing if we
face the same charges and discounts for assaying and refining on a
metal that is priced at palladium’s current price.

What do you mean economically viable? I sure as hell don’t let the
refiner just keep the palladium that they recover from my scrap
without paying me for it  But I don’t get as good a return on it
as I do on gold. On gold you can get around a 3% refining charge on
platinum or any of the platinum group metals it is between 15% and
30% depending on your volume and your relationship with your refiner.
The reason for this is that the typical refiners don’t refine the
PGM’s to their pure state. They collect them and when they have
enough (several kilos !) they send it out to one of the Platinum
refiners like Johnson Mathey or Englehard to separate them into their
pure states. This is due to the expensive and dangerous processes
required to refine the PGM’s to pure metal. So you pay for them to
hold onto your platinum, palladium, iridium, ruthenium etc till they
have a couple of kilos to send out to refine.

Hi

Palladium refining is available if more expensive than gold. Typical
rates are 10% to 15% with an assay charge. The good news is that
palladium recasts really well if handled properly.

Sorry that I am a little behind in reading Ganoksin.

The answer is “yes.” Hoover & Strong has refined Palladium for a
long time and is very experienced with the metal. We have a new
system that allows us to return 90% in 10 days. The same applies to
Platinum. Please call 800-759-9997 option 3 for the refinery for
details on refining charges and current specials.

Is that for mixed (ie palladium white gold, red gold, yellow gold
950 PD All mixed together) scrap or single metal scrap?
