Would like to set up a medium size vacuum casting machin with torch
flame melting the metal.
What are the pros and cons to have a kitchen stove hood for the
fumes? and at which height from the crucible should be it placed ?

All depends on the air flow in the room from AC and heater. I took a
kitchen hood and then some aluminum sheet about 24-28 gauge and
attached it to theoutside of the hood on 3 sides. It works very
well. To test it I took a paper towel and set it on fire to see how
the smoke moved within the space orout side.
