Bob are you fully cleaning the stone, your hands and your
everything around, When using ceramic disks. Everything needs to
be cleaned before going to the polish step. Ceramic disks are
good for hard stones like sapphire, but they can be a real pain
the area is not free from all dirt and other contamination. Like
a piece of grit from the last step…

Use alcohol to clean your stone, then soap and water for your
hands and equipment Hope this helps AL

Dear Bob,

You don’t say whether the disk is new to you or if just the
problem is new. I’ll assume the disk is new. If you have a
Graves ceramic lap which is said to have a more porous surface
than others; you are probably using too much diamond. As weird
as it sounds you spray just a little on; wipe it around and then
wipe 90% of it off with a tissue. You don’t want any diamond
particles on the surface, only those in the tiny pits. The
scrubbing should have ruled out contamination. If your lap is
not a Graves, that in itself could be the problem as there are
few pores for the diamond to ride in and it tends to roll around
on top and scratch. The best use for a lap of this kind is as a
masterlap for others placed on top of it. Some folks advocate a
layer of graphite lubicant on such a lap which you might try.

Best regards
