If I want to remove file marks etc before putting small silver

any suggestion as to the best way to remove these marks prior to
polishing?

I just recently went through this problem and learned to clean
up using sanding stick with fine grits - or - buffing with
bobbing and/or tripoli depending on depth of marks.

I used to use a product called a Beartex wheel. It fits on the
tapered spindel of your polishing motor and is available in
different grits. I bought them from Gesswein in Connecticut,
USA. You would have to try the different grits to determine
which will work the best with your choice of tumbling media.
Emery paper works well on flap mandrels in a flex shaft
handpiece, but is slower.
