Praise for Rio Grande

Rita -- there's a free copy of the backordered (once again in
stock) book on its way to you as an apology for the frustration
related to that transaction, and as I said, we'll contact you off
line to see what we can do to improve our relationship.

Wow.

I cant think of a retailer that would bend over backwards for there
customer like this here in Australia. Clearly the retailer has done
nothing wrong as the product was pre-paid but unavailable for
despatch. I am impressed.

Chris (first post) Hope I did it right.

Hi! I need to make it very clear that I wasn’t ordering metal. What
I’d ordered was a pint of rust colored patina. What I received was a
4 oz bottle of it.

Happy Holidays, everyone! Rita

Rita,

You’re mixing unlike terms. There is no relationship between troy
measurement and liquid measurement. A troy ounce is a unit of
weight. A fluid ounce is a unit of volume. Since liquids have varying
specific gravities identical volumes have different weights. for
example a gallon (128 fluid ounces) of gasoline will weigh roughly 6
lbs. (96 oz. avoirdupois). A gallon of milk, on the other hand, will
weigh about 140 oz. avoirdupois.

Rio's prices are not wholesale, they are retail. So even when one
purchases multiples, we are still paying retail - and the cost of
the items we sell are more than what can be purchased off the
internet. Anyone can buy from Rio, no resale license required. ....
Though even having said that, I have often lamented that even the
highest multiple purchase available for an item is still higher
than I've gotten that same item at a wholesale show. "the cost of
the items we sell are more than what can be purchased off the
Internet"

I have no idea what what that sentence means. I find it difficult to
make a generalization about what items one would buy at a show as
being less than Rio’s. If someone travels to a show, the travel cost
certainly affects the price. Items at a show can be extremely
limited, are you talking about beads? Just the shipping price on an
internet purchase can raise the price over Rio’s.

I can buy some products from Rio that I cannot get from Stuller. I
can buy some products from Hoover and Strong less expensive than from
Stuller, but if I need a gemstone with my order, I pay a little more
from Stuller, but for the same shipping cost, I get the gemstone
with my order. Stuller can ship overnight Fedex for half what other
companies charge, and sometimes that overnight shipping makes the
sale. There are a lot of sales that are not price sensitive, it is
need based.

The reality for me is that I have to buy what I need from who has it
and price usually isn’t much of an issue.

I do a lot of repair, custom, and I manufacture inventory for my
store, in gold and sterling, we also use gemstone beads. I cannot
think of any items Rio sells that I could not get a good profit
from.

If you are making something where there is a lot of competition, and
a lot of people sell items for low prices and that restricts what you
can charge, the issue is how and where you market what you make, not
what you pay for supplies. Some people can spend $30 and make $60,
some can spend $30 and get $150.

When I save money buying something at a show, I still sell it as if
I bought it from my regular supplier. I do not lower the price, I
make more profit.

One thing I get when I buy from Rio is Rio. Rio will back my purchase
if there is a problem, the same reason I bought a Bonny Doon and
didn’t build it myself, if there is a problem with the press I have
the experience of the company to back me up. Often the companies I
find at shows are very difficult to get any help from the rest of the
year. Here on Orchid we have Andrea Hill answering problems. How many
companies do I deal with where I have access to the CEO of that
company? Outside of my trade maybe zero.

Rio’s catalog is a sales tool for me as well as my clients. Rio
increased the competition with their catalog, I use their catalog as
a reference tool when I am doing research for almost any purchase.

That they are not the cheapest is not my issue, I am not the
cheapest either, people don’t come to me for Walmart merchandise.

Ahhhh, once again, I need to explain - I ordered a 16 oz Rust COLORED
Patina. I was sent a 4 oz bottle of Rust COLORED Patina - it was
supposed to have been a 16 oz bottle (PINT)- for this item (I’m not
even sure it’s still in their Rio catalog) I’d paid more than $20.00
US. When I called to question what I received, I was told that the
reason I only got a 4oz instead of a PINT of this rust colored patina
was because there is a difference between oz and ozt. I KNEW that
METAL was weighed as OZT and I know what an OZ is! I don’t think the
person on the other end of the phone knew what they were talking
about. I was also told that there would be a restocking fee if I
returned the item. This happened a long time ago, and things may have
changed at Rio. But, this was not the only time that I had problems
with orders from Rio. Recently, though, it seems that they have
better customer service, and are truly trying to provide great
service.

When the time came for my dad, Phil Woodard of IJS, to propose to my
mom, he did so with a diamond, a prong mount, and a ring shank bought
from Saul Bell of Rio Grande.

Rio does what IJS is unwilling/unable to do. They have access to a
science/engineering community from Los Alamos and Sandia National
labs, not to mention other various Albuq. area high-tech businesses.

I got out of college with printing and publishing credentials, and
applied to Avant Marketing, Rio’s catalog publisher. Couldn’t do a
dern thing about my bloodline, but was 2nd runner up in a field of
50 to work there.

I’m still proud of I.J.S., and we are competitive with Rio. It keeps
us both honest, I’d like to think.

Rio does what IJS is unwilling/unable to do.

True, but Indian Jewelers Supply does some things that Rio does not
do, which I appreciate. For example, I can buy base metal bezel cups
from IJS (and nowhere else, that I know of). This keeps certain
designs very affordable, and they’re fun for students. They also
carry base metal gallery wire and circles. Thanks, IJS!
