Please Vote: *Orchid As A Digest*

** Please Vote - Should we turn Orchid into a Digest? **

Dear Orchid Members,

As the load of orchid’s traffic is getting higher (up to 40 messages
a day!), and for some of you this load seems to be hard to manage,
I would like to suggest you guys to turn the orchid forum into a
digest format.

That is, messages will be send as usual to orchid@ganoksin.com address
but instead of been send to the forum as a separate messages,
they will be edited by me into one digest style posting.

This new format will take place ONLY after I will get your response.

I like things the way they are now. Maybe you could have a digest in
addition to the regular list. I find you lose something in the digest form.

Dr. Aspler: I vote for the digest if its a daily e-mail, even though
there’s lots of messages the way it is now , we do get fast responses, and
no way around it, working on a digest is going to be alot of work for YOU.

Perhaps Orchid could be done both ways. The digest format could be compiled
and mailed to those who need that format. For those who can handle the
traffic, things stay the same. However, the digest format sounds like a lot
of work for someone to do on a daily basis. I agree that the current system
provides a more timely response to the most pressing of questions.

Just my $.02 worth.

Dear Dr Hanuman,

I enjoy reading Orchid, but think it would be much easier as a
digest. I’d cast my vote for a digest.

Orchid as a digest? I vote yes. As long as you can keep the regular
format for those who want it.

Enthusiastic yes! I was reluctantly about to request a cut off because of
the volume. Great idea.

I believe that there are several excellent e-mail programs on the market,
most provide various levels of messages filtering as well as mailbox
slotting.

I personally enjoy the several/multiple conversations that may be taking
place at the same time … it can provide several different answers or
questions at the appropriate or relevant time in the discussion or
additional questions or input which aids in the understanding of the problem
or discussion.

Thanks for the opportunity to provide comment and opinion.

My two cents…

Don’t really know what this is, but if it would be like reading the
newspaper, then my vote would be “No”. If we lose the personal
side of this communication, we’re back to the usual, IMHO.

Dear Dr. Aspler and other list members: I have no objection to a digest
but the size of the list and the clumsiness of handling it could be greatly
reduced if all members learn to do the following: When you respond to a
post, EDIT THE ORIGINAL POST in other word, zero in on the relevent item,
erase the rest, strip out the ganoksin heading, and focus. Thus, there is
NO reason that a quick thanks for Mr. Brain’s terrific 6 pg. resource list
should be appended to the entire list and sent out again. And this has
happened. In the last week we have seen replies stacked up on replies:

Now, a digest is a good idea, but, if one simply hits the response button
to reply, the reply is appended to the entire digest, again. If this
happens more than once there will be real unhappiness out there. Maybe
working with the ins and outs of the mailer programs is the first line of
action.

Sincerely, Eve Wallace

My vote is to leave it the way it is and ask people to edit more.

My vote is no, I think it would be too much work for Dr. Aspler and he is
already very gracious
