hi Rick in KC,

the toilet paper trick is not exclusive to platinum. tho water
based heat sinks are the only way i know of at the moment to
protect stones set in platinum without possibility of
contaminating the platinum. this ‘process’ can be used for any
metal gem combo to protect the stones from heat. it is quite
effective for me.

get a little toilet paper wet, stuff it behind or lay it on top
or wrap it around the gem and braze away. it helps to locate the
join below the heat sink because the stream of steam interferes
with brazing.

with a little practice and guts, one can retip a small stone
setting that is in the immediate proximity of a heat sensitive
stone (i’m not talking about platinum here!).

I hope you arent talking Platinum here. There is NO stone on
this planet, that can be re-tipped with platinum
technique…period! I advise if you are welding or brazing near a
stone, to remove the stone , or, if the stone can take heat, use
gold technique, i.e. gold solder. For covering , “Jewel-Cool” is
a brand of protection jel, the toilet paper method can also be
done with wet cotton, or use my favorite “beach sand trick.” Fill
a small tin to about 3/4 of the way with sand and then fill the
whole can with water. The ring can be placed in the sand, and
moved to any position desired. The stone is submeged in water and
you can now weld away , pointing the flame up, rather than down
toward the water. As long as there is water, the stone will be
fine…But remember…when in doubt, remove the stone…it is so
much less costly then a replacement. In case you do truly need to
re-tip a diamond, melt a small amount of 14KW easy solder on the
tip and solder a platinum wire to that. Now form the tip with
the Platinum wire and voilla! you have just re-tipped a diamond.
Oh one more thing…Be sure the diamond is clean,AND check for
fracture filling before applying heat. Good luck.
