Petrified Wood simulant - Watch out!

"Petrified Wood Is Created at Laboratory - from Associated Press

YAKIMA - Researchers at a national science laboratory in
Richland have found a way to achieve in days what takes Mother
Nature millions of years: converting wood to mineral.

The ability to make petrified wood could hold promise for
separating industrial chemicals, filtering pollutants and
soaking up contamination, said Yongsoon Shin, research
scientist at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory.

“Wood petrified is very hard and very porous material - it’s
not really a wood component,” Shin said yesterday.

Interesting that they’re making it to a particular degree of
porosity for their purposes. It doesn’t seem like they’ll be working
toward the type of structure that is conducive to jewelry-quality
petrified wood, but I could see someone using the technology to try
and manufacture some of the more expensive types, i.e. the wonderful
red Arizona stuff.

A lot of simulants and mock-ups are made for industrial purposes
originally - diamonds, zeolites, the vapor-deposited metal coatings
that make “Mystic topaz” and aqua aura. But those with an eye for a
dollar will find a way to market the bling factor.
