Pastry Tips

I am in a very isolated situation. I have been a loner for 16 yrs. now.
I don’t get out much as far as interacting goes. I intentionaly
seperated myself from the rest of the industry in order to create pieces
that did not have any outside influance involved. costly but
necessasary. I am finding myself smilingg alot when I get in to “the
forum”. I remember when I first started. I thought I was the worlds
greatest jeweler 28 yrs ago. as time goes by now i realize how much i
don’t know.the more i learn the less i know, does this make sense? if i
can help in any way just ask.

Michael,

Sorta sacrificing yourself for your art, huh? Took a look at your
designs; oddly enough, they were ones I had already admired without a clue
as to who did them, so whatever you’re doing, it’s working. I can imagine
some of the things on the forum can get you smiling (some of them mine, I’m
sure!). Haven’t been in the business as long as you, but I know exactly
what you mean about the more you learn the less you know. I spend as much
time expanding my knowledge as I do working. Appreciate the offer of help,
although you may well live to regret it :-). BTW, in answer to your other
post, I’m in Maryland, down around the Annapolis area, eastern time zone.

Just so you know.whoever said to use hot water rather than tepid was
correct. i tried it today for the first time and i loved the action in
the vacume.wild. now the wait for bubbles, tho i’m sure there wont be any

I knew i’d be influenced if i hung around other artists so i chose
isoplation, it was the only way to avoid being tainted, consiously or
subconsious,shit happens.

I guess I need to have something to carve, something that is hard enough
to carve and finish it to a “no flaw” finish. I was being judgemental
because I started out with soft wax useing the addition method. I
reached a point in my career that could no longer be expressed using
that method. this is when I began the exploration of hard carving waxes.
With this method I can create more exacting models and works of art. I
was in no way begrudging you, All I could see was a big tool trying to
do small work.I was talking about me, no-one else.

MG,

Although I do a lot of artistic work with my medium, I’m afraid I am (so
far) absolutely HOPELESS at carving - hence my reliance on other methods to
translate my thoughts into pieces. Working with soft wax does have
limitations and takes a lot more refining to produce a great finish, but
then you haven’t seen my attempts at carving ;-). That’s what makes this
such a great forum; all of us use slightly different methods but with the
same goal, to create beauty from the raw materials.

Some of you may want to try sculpting wax.It is soft and can be
shaped with tools or the fingers. It is what is commonly used for shaping
bronzes but I have used it for jewelry.sort of sticky and comes in 1.3
inch strips 15 inchs long about and is brown…G

Dave, Dave,

I recommend Susan take over ‘our’ VP of Customer satisfaction, feature
development, etc… That’s assuming she can help us get our guns working
with the ‘DE TIP’ feature…

Wonder how much art starts off as ‘duddleing’ … which ends up formulating

Dave,

Using just ‘old’ red (Think its referred to as sticky wax). Sold in various
sizes in most catalogs to build wax trees with…fits fine!! Gun triger
pulls the wax down — mine loads from the back(therefore can also PUSH wax
down myself) Can get guns that LOAD BULLETs of glue… didn’t care for the
bullet type… My gun is only the size of your hand!

Like to talk to you some time about the basics for carving . . always want

I can’t help but think of the trim aound the bottom and top of cakes … all

When I get ‘my gun’ fitted with the ‘DE TIP’ feature … I’m taking myself
and gun down to the local BAKERY… Request they make a few samples using
the SDJS GUN with their choice of Tips… I HAVE SEEN MANY, MANY DESIGNS
ON CAKES THAT WOULD BE NEAT, AT 1-3 INCHES LONG on a neckless or ‘with a
twist’ as a ‘hang me down’ on a omega, etc… clunky, funky or not!!!

Susan,

HHHHEEEELLLLLPPPPPPP!!!!!!

Spent the week-end looking for the *&^$!@)(^& pastry tip connector… To HD,
a couple of Plumbing shops etc… have not found the connector…

I am willing to swap replace as necessary; pastry fitting/tips, gun, etc…
This is what I have to work with;

Gun . . Wax(Glue) gun will almost fit in your hand as to size… loads from
the back… got it at HD but have seen them all over. Compared the ‘big’ gun
with mine and it appear the cone tips are 99% identical.

Pastry fitting/tips… OLD Pastry gun . . is cylindrical, push down handle
at the end … works like an old by cycle pump! The tip end screws off with
what is called an bayonet fitting. . The TIP,cone shaped, fits into a round
open end, screw fitting, that screws onto the round(1 1/2inch) bayonet end
of the pastry gun… the screw fitted end that holds the cone tip is a 1/2
inch pipe screw fitting, with just maybe a little taper… it has a flange at
the end to prevent leaks at the screw fitting…

PROBLEM . . . Went to the Plumbing brass fixture area of HD… could not
find a fitting that was tapered … at all!.. I assume when you said
tapered you wanted the taper to fit over the end of the glue gun???.. Did
find a 'barbed fitting, about 3/16 - 1/4(?) inch round that ended in a 9/16
inch pipe fitting thread, ONLY the fitting like this that I would require as
a plastic fitting…

VERY BEST I COULD FIND … THAT WAS EVEN CLOSE …Said they didn/didn’t carry
the fitting I could use in brass…

IS YOUR FITTING REALLY ‘’’‘TAPPERED’’’’, OR IS IT ‘BARRED’ .

WHAT ARE THE EXACT MEASUREMENT AT EACH END???

It appears that even if I had a barred fitting that fit, the solder joint
would not be very good… the barred fitting is round, not cone shaped…

HHH EEE LLLL PPP !!!

Jim and Susan: we had a board meeting (boy were we bored) and decided to
promote Susan to VP of Customer Satisfaction. Several of our beta testers
are having trouble with the pastry tip additon and need help with that
connection feature. A suitable salary increase and more company stock will
