Packing material behind stones?

Another thing to remember is be sure the sawdust is very very
fine. Even tiny wood curls can cause the cab to sit higher in the
bezel than it should and will over time allow the cab to loosen
as the sawdust packs. If you have a friendly woodworker type
around, gather up some of the finer dust and (don’t laugh) run it
through a flour sifter. What comes out is ideal for bezel setting
cabs.

Dorothy – been there, done that, got laughed at and don’t care

Hi Gang,

I’ve heard of a lot of things to put under cabs that are bezel
set; even used some of them myself.

Here’s one item I haven’t seen suggested, if any of you have
tried it, how did it work?

How about using the plastic material the packing peanuts are
made from? It comes in many shapes & is easily cut. It’s
compressable & has some resilience, especially in it’s denser
forms. If the exact size required isn’t available, a thicker
piece could be cut with a hot knife or saw to the desired
thickness.

I gather all the sawdust, but then I put it into my electric
coffee grinder and grind it until it is fine. I have not had any
problem setting stones using this method . . . perhaps, it just
takes a bit of getting used to?

i don’t know anything about setting, but i do know that many of
these packing peanuts are made of a special bio degradable
material (rice based, i think), that dissolves in water. if you
decide to use this method, make sure you use the right kind
