"Orchid in Print" Book Series Announced

A very easy way to remove finger prints and other stuff from
gemstones before you display them is to wipe them with "Sight Savers"
made by Dow Corning. Thery are availabe in many drug storesIt works
like a harm.

David Huffman, “we” forgot one simple request…:>)

KEEP YOUR FINGERS AWAY FROM THE ROTATING SHARP TIP ! thats if you
want to donate some thumb and finger “pads” to science!..(groan!) oh
well, I now have 9 left to use!..(sick!)…gerry!

Would it be possible to see a photo of the finished item? I
would like to try making this tool, but as usual, I need something
visual to refer to.

Hi Ruth. It certainly is possible to see a photo. I’ll take a shot
and send as soon as possible, off-list.

A word of advice to those who use these burnishers. Use them
in an old #30 foredom hand piece.

This is very good advice, and I should have mentioned it in my
original post. Since I usually use thicker material than will fit
into the “collet” of a quick-change handpiece, I errantly assumed
everyone interested would use the size I recommended in the “chuck”
of the #30. I don’t think the Foredom quick-change handpiece’s
collet is replaceable by the average user, and one of these tools
will surely ruin it.

Karen You asked about favourite polishing compounds…

For years I used Tripoli followed by red rouge. I was always unhappy
with the red rouge results. About a year ago I switched to green
rouge. It removes fine scratches much better than red rouge and
leaves a more lustrous polish. I prefer this to the red rouge
mirror finish.

I use a small felt buff on my flex shaft for final rouge polishing.

For cleaning after polishing I use sudsy ammonia. It is excellent
for cutting through the waxy base in rouge and tripole. I buy my
sudsy ammonia in the grocery store for about $2 for 4 litres. Much
less expensive than any jewellers cleaning solution. I keep the
cleaner warm by placing a small amount in a baby food jar. The jar
goes into an old pot that has a few inches of water in it, which I
keep on a hot plate set on low. I use old tooth brushes to lightly
brush off the rouge without marring the polish.

Also good for removing fingerprints is a product that watchmakers
use called “Rodico” and is made by the wonderful people at Bergeon,
ref. no. is 6033-1. It comes in stick form and resembles "blue tac"
and is used to remove dirt from the plates of watches.

Don – unless they have changed in the last few years, "sigt savers"
do have some silicon in them, that can scratch. At least, it can
scratch your glasses (especially if you have plastic lenses.)
However, it may not scratch the harder things like don’t
know about that. But a soft cloth (like an old t-shirt,) will do
fine.
