Hi, This is probably complicating things, but there are potential
ways to scientifically date jade objects. Much research still needs
to be done, one process that seems promising is to quantify the
absorption of nitrogen from the atmosphere into the jade. Measuring
the diffusion of nitrogen into jade (or indeed into other materials -
it might even work with gold) needs complex analytical equipment - ie
a full-scale research lab not a x 10 lens! - and is hardly likely to
become a routine process. However, such an approach might be
justified if a museum or wealthy collector was considering purchasing
a major piece or if there was litigation involved.
