Ted,
You sound like the kind of loving thoughtful father that all men
should strive to be. We would have so much less trouble in the world
if all children were treated this way.

Hans, I know you mean well, but comparing your abilities as a master
craftsman with the abilities of someone who is looking to paint
watch faces just doesn’t make any sense. The original poster isn’t
looking to discover the magical world of watchmaking by trial &
error, just have some watch faces to decorate to match handmade
bands.

The original poster isn’t looking to discover the magical world of
watchmaking There is a philosophy that I adhere to strictly. One of
the most important things in life to understand: If youdon’t like to
do something make damn sure that you don’t do it well. I barely even
know how watches work and that suits me just fine.
If you don't like to do something make damn sure you don't do it well.
John! You have out-done yourself. What if you happen to do something
well, it seems like no big deal, and people are impressed and want
you to do more of it? But you don’t really like doing it, but you
sort of enjoy having people tell you that you do it well, but really
you have to pay the rent, and in your spare time, after doing
everything that everyone else wants you to do, maybe then you’ll get
to do what you think you really want to do, and am I in this to make
myself happy, or to make other people happy, or just to support
myself, or to support myself and my child. I get your point, but I
have spent a lot of time doing things I don’t “like to do”. Including
chatting up potential customers. I don’t know how watches work
either, but they are sort of fascinating. I work on the goldsmithing
part of them, not the mechanisms. I am afraid that if I learned more
about them (which I know I could do if I really wanted to) I would
get stuck doing that all the time. The same goes for lots of things.
I suppose that I could have been a professional musician, if I had
wanted to badly enough, or a doctor, or a writer. You too. I want to
think that what you meant t say was "Be good at everything, just
don’t let anyone know.
