Off topic but important

Sorry to post this off topic message. I think that it is important though.
This is about viruses. Ok, now you’re thinking “Here we go again, it’s a
hoax!” I design jewelry part-time. I work in computing services for a
university full-time(pays most of the bills plus health insurance:-) )
Within the past three weeks I’ve seen some very nasty macro viruses. Now
some of the can reformat your hard drive or delete key system files. I
would suggest anyone who uses Microsoft Word go to Microsoft’s web site(
www.microsoft.com ) and download a file called scanprot.dot. After
opening the file in Word it will setup Word to prompt you before running
macros in other documents. This is no guarantee though, you see there are
rumors(though i believe they could be true) that someone created a program
or wizard that will allow ANYONE to create a macro virus. Know where your
documents come from. If you’re not sure, open them as raw text. Sorry
again, but I thought you’d want to know.

Jeff,

Unfortunately,… Been there done that!!! … Norton doesn’t catch it!! …
Have run scanprot.dot and it ‘Work for ME!’ … had one file ‘cleared’ caused
one hell-of-a-lot-of problems too. Still trying to get rid of some… Almost
decided to ‘REFORMAT’ . . . But when I started Backing up (using #@%^&#!*
Windows '95… they should rename the product as suggested here!) I realized
that the '95 backup is to simple to handle ANY problems of ‘value’…(eg when
ask if you want to erase a floppy, you respond, YES, 16 floppies latter it
dies, etc. ) . . Best download NOW!!! … Having problems with MS relaseing
my modem, etc.

Say, why is it you PC guys have so many viruses? I had a Mac virus that did
virtually nothing about five years ago and never one since. Dave

Macs are said to be more immune to some government snooping as well
and I watched an effort to pick out of a Mac which took 4
days instead of the PC’s 4 hours…G…

Dave,

I’m sure you are aware of the way the basic virus works . . Mac are not
exempt…
