Note to new jewelers

I never use gold to solder platinum. there are easy melt platinum
solders if you need to use them but most times hard to med will
work on anything if you are not good at simply fusing the metals
with a thin sheet of platinum..

How do you get that white coating off set diamond when you retip
with platinum?

I think the issue is if there are diamonds or other gemstones in the
piece.

You are not going to play solder that. The heat would ruin them.
That’s when you use gold solder and that’s only to join rings or
retip.

If I ever when into a repair focused business model, then I’d buy an
Orion or a PUK 4 (is my preference, for propriety reasons I can’t
discuss this in an open forum).

There’s no issue, you just re-tip the claws (prongs) with the stone
in place, an easy job with these machines.

You don’t get white coating off diamonds if you retipped with
platinum with diamond in place. You have fried the diamond and re
cutting/polishing is only option and diamond might still have
internal damage. Platinum melting temps direct on diamond burns
diamond. If you dont have a laser or some other welder, you remove
the diamond, retip, reset. Some jewelers gold solder platinum tips
on. Tacky if you ask me (pun intended).

I agree it isn’t the Correct thing to do, but many retail clients
simply won’t pay the price required to do the job correctly.

(I’m aware of the can of worms I’ve opened here.)
