Went to The Compleat Sculptor (NYC) today and was introduced to a new product for moldable wax that results in a clean burn out. Has anyone here tried SculptaClay yet? Apparently, it’s a clay like wax, I just bought a small trial sample of all 3 types(red - soft, grey green - med(?) and brown(?)) because I was told lots of NY jewelers are using it to create more organic designs….?
Hi fellow New Yorker! I love the Compleat Sculptor. This sounds cool- can you compare it at all to the “classic” pink modeling wax? I have always found that really frustrating to work with, but I know some people are amazing with it.
Sculpture modeling wax, mostly the dark brown stuff, is significantly less sticky than the red sticky wax that is used by some jewelers for build-up pieces.
That said, years ago when I worked at T&Co. as I was dropping something off to be polished I happened to see one of the modelers working on a trophy. He was using red sticky wax to build an extraordinary, sinuous dragon around the body of a loving-cup trophy that would later be sent to T’s sterling factory in NJ (now gone BTW). It was amazing to see the detail and delicacy with which he worked in a wax I’ve also always found very sticky to work with.
One thing I noted, once the rough form was established he didn’t touch the wax with his fingers, but used various tools for carving and texturing.
I will post my review/updates on the Sculptaclay when I finally try it out soon!
