I so love my Jeffrey Herman hammer that was made by Sturlin. It is so perfectly balanced and the handle is so perfectly shaped that when properly held at the base of the handle it basically swings itself into action. It doesn’t need a death grip and gravity does all of the work.
Now I’m gonna step in it here. I know a whole bunch of folks who seriously love their Fretz hammers. And that’s just fine for them. However as pretty as they are I feel that the handles are too short and thick at the lower part for my taste. Yes the Sturlin hammers are more expensive that the Fretz but to me it’s worth the extra money.

Hi Jo,
i believe the hammers are made by Saign Charlestein…for Jefferey Herman and Michael David Sturlin…

I took that workshop in Jan '22. It’s fabulous, taught by Saign Charlestein. Taking classes and workshops is my retirement hobby. I don’t get much jewelry made but I have a lot of fun.
Just to clarify: Saign Charlestein makes the hammers. My collaboration with Saign resulted in the Sturlin Goldsmith’s Hammer he is producing as a new addition to his Signature Series of specialty metalsmithing tools.
The workshop referenced is Saign’s workshop in January, not mine. My studio retreats are filled for 2024.
