Mixing Business with Children

Dear Orchidians, From comments I’ve seen along the way, I know there
are a number of you who are successfully running home-based businesses
while raising children. I’d like to hear how you do it!

I’m currently writing an article for Lapidary Journal on the joys and
challenges of combining creating jewelry with raising children, and
I’d like to give some real-world examples of people who are doing it.
As a part-time writer and full-time mother of a 1 1/2 year old, I know
it can be done – and I know that it never seems to work quite as you
envisioned it when the baby was just a twinkle in your eye! I’d like
to share your advice on overcoming the challenges and the stories of
why it’s all worthwhile with LJ’s readers (and learn a thing or two
myself!).

Would any of you be willing to take the time to give me a telephone

Suzanne, Hello, I’ve just recently opened a store here in Guthrie, but
I did have my shop at home for over 16 years. My husband of 7 years is
now in the business and my son is also following the jewelry side of
the family. Rob sold the farm and we opened the store for a
fulfillment of a dream. Between the 2 of us we have 9 children, some
his some mine and some other marriages. Only 2 are left at home now.

Wow, do you ever have a lot of experience with balancing kids and
work at home! I’d love to hear about your experiences. Would you be

Hi Suzanne, Another gal you might talk to is Kathy Palochak
(kpalck@trib.com). She’s a regular contributor on Orchid. She lives in
Wyoming, out in the country, about 25 miles from the nearest town if I
remember right. She & her husband run a ranch & when she isn’t doing
the homemaker thing she home schools their youngsters & still has
time for jewelry design & mfg.

I’ve never met her personally, but have corresponded via e-mail. She
seems like one super lady.
