Mildew

Here’s a different problem for you ! I had a number of finished
pieces ( pitcher, bowl, sugar & creamer set ) tissue wrapped and
stored in my basement for some time. When I brought them back
upstairs I found that the tissue AND the silver smelled strongly
of mildew. Can anyone suggest a way of removing the mildew from
silver without discoloring the silver or requiring that they be
repolished ?

Thanks for even trying.

Wash the objects in hot soapy water and set out in the sun. The
sunshould help kill any spores hiding in cracks that the soap
and water miss. Dry and polish (not buff) with a soft cloth.

Try dipping them into hot pickle. That should kill the mildew.

I’ve had things mildew that could not be washed or sprayed with
chlorine and have found that wrapping and re-wrapping them with
newspaper will eventually take out the odor. If it still smells
after the cleaning and setting out in the sun, try this.
