Michigan local sources?

Hi

Does anyone know of sources in southeastern Michigan (near Saline)
for jewelry-making or metalsmithing classes, or maybe a
metalsmithing artist community? We’ve just moved here and are
wondering what’s available.

Hi Leslie;

I used to live near there. Why not get in contact with U of M’s or
Eastern Michigan U’s metalsmithing departments? Also, if you’re a
SNAG member, look in their members directory and see what/who you can
find. If you’re not a member, let me know, I’ve got a directory and I
can look and see what I can come up with. Feel free to email me off
forum.

Leslie,

There are a couple of them in your area. The Michigan Silversmith
Guild is a very nice group and the location for the meetings is
great. I have only been a couple of times but very rewarding.

Ann Arbor Art Center has a series of classes taught by two very
accomplished people, open studio time, etc, etc. I’ve taken several
classes there, volunteered as an open studio monitor, donated a
rolling mill, and have really enjoyed it. The studio itself is just
north of downtown with it’s own parking lot, in an old factory. They
have classes in other mediums as well. feel free to back channel for
more info.

CR Hill & Co in Berkley are a good source for Tools and Supplies.

Renee, Craig and John are excellent people to deal with.

They should be able to guide you to other teachers resources for
Metal and Silversmithing.

Hi,

I live on the west side of Michigan, so I am really only familiar
with this side of the state (and even that is arguable). If you don’t
mind a bit of a drive, Kendall College in Grand Rapids offers some
classes. Otherwise, check with Michigan State or U of M. If they
don’t offer something, they might be able to point you in the right
direction. Of course, as others have mentioned, try checking with
SNAG or the Michigan Silversmith Guild at www.misilversmith.org.

Hope that helps!
