Metorites

I’ve been reading the talk about metorites with some interest.
How do you go about using meteorites in jewelry? Do you set it
like it’s any other kind of stone? I’ve seen the meteorites for
sale at the Meteorite Man site and I’d like to try one sometime
soon. Any special advice I would need? Excuse me if this is a
simplistic question, I’ve never heard of meteorites in jewelry
before!

Hi Nicolette,

You can use meteorites (look for octahedrites) like stones with
the added advantage that you can work them with the tools you’ve
got for jewellery work, i.e. saw, file, turn, sand and polish
them to whatever shape you like, only the outer layer of the
“rough” is sometimes a bit on the hard side for working with
metal tools, but you can remove it by grinding off. When
polished, etch the structure with 5% solution of nitric acid in
ethanol, you can watch the pattern emerge. You can then set the
meteorite piece or even solder it in place, as Jeffrey told us.

Good luck, Markus
