March workshops in NYC

Hi New York area Orchidians,

I’m going to be in NYC for MJSA and to visit my mum, and have been
prevailed upon to give a couple of workshops while in town. They
will be held at Celia Bauer’s Studios (they rent benches too I hear).

Catches, Hinges and Mechanisms
Thursday, March 3

This workshop deals with catches, hinge and mechanism making,
its tricks and considerations. Simple and complex hinges are
described and discussed. An introduction is made to box catch
making, other catches are described. Lewton-Brain is the author
of the book “Hinges and Hinge-based Catches for Jewelers and
Goldsmiths”.

Bench Tricks
Friday, March 4th

This workshop is an packed compilation of
goldsmith’s tricks and fast, sure construction procedures for
building jewelry. Toolmaking possibilities for bench aids are
dealt with and cheap, easy to make versions of complex tools
are discussed. There is a fair amount of lecture and
demonstration time in this intensive workshop-be prepared to
take notes. Steel theory, hardening and tempering may be
touched on.The workshop may include a range of subject areas :
basic toolmaking, hardening and tempering, fitting and layout
for catches, flex shaft tools and uses, construction tips,
soldering and soldering tricks, material and tool sources.
