#1

Hi New York area Orchidians,

I’m going to be in NYC for MJSA and to visit my mum, and have been
prevailed upon to give a couple of workshops while in town. They
will be held at Celia Bauer’s Studios (they rent benches too I hear).

This workshop deals with catches, hinge and mechanism making,
its tricks and considerations. Simple and complex hinges are
described and discussed. An introduction is made to box catch
making, other catches are described. Lewton-Brain is the author
of the book “Hinges and Hinge-based Catches for Jewelers and
Goldsmiths”.

Bench Tricks

goldsmith’s tricks and fast, sure construction procedures for
building jewelry. Toolmaking possibilities for bench aids are
dealt with and cheap, easy to make versions of complex tools
are discussed. There is a fair amount of lecture and

take notes. Steel theory, hardening and tempering may be
