MAPP propane keep throwing flames

I am so thankful for Ganoksin and all the wonderful people who
participate! Yesterday I was using my Mapp propane - it kept throwing
flames (not too far), but the worst was when the fire came out of
the knob where you turn to open the propane. What went wrong?

Thanks, Joy

Hi Joy,

From your description of what happened, I’d say the torch has a
loose or leaking valve.

The varying size of the flame indicates an uneven supply of gas to
the tip. The fact that a flame came out of the area near the control
knob indicates a worn seal or loose components in the valve area.

Depending on the make of the torch, the part of the valve through
which the shaft to which the knob is attached may be able to be
tightened.

If all else fails, replacing the torch is the safest option.
