Dear Sir,

I tried beating the gold into gold leaf but the gold breaks off into
small pieces. Why is this happening and what do do I have to do to
prevent this breaking.

one must put the gold between pieces of leather and use mallets to
beat it out to the appropriate thickness. it also helps if you first
roll it as thin as possible in a mill, then procede to beating it as
thin as possible. in Bihar, they use wooden mallets to produce leaf
and it takes quite a lot of time to produce any leaf of reasonable
size…if you need really detailed instructiojn i suggest oppi
untracht’s metal techniques for craftsmen, or if you read hindi, ther
is a book called “goldsmithing for temple artisans”, though out of
print. it is a painstaking process ( i have tried it!) and expect to
spend a few days to make a 3x3" piece of leaf… if you need more info
i’ll be happy to share what i know…

Hello Raj,

Making gold leaf From: Raj Mani Dear Sir, I tried beating the gold
into gold leaf but the gold breaks off into small pieces. Why is
this happening and what do do I have to do to prevent this
breaking.

I always purchase the gold foils and gold leaf that I use, so I have
never attempted to make my own, but I mentioned your posted question
to Allan Heywood and he pointed me to a link about the process of
making gold leaf, hopefully it will be of use to you.

Here is a link to a web article on the subject of making gold leaf:

Also perhaps a Google search on the subject would yield other
articles about making gold leaf.
