this has worked for me:
do not cut the wire after running it through the hinge - slip a
small sterling bead the same size as the melted 'ball' at the other
end on the wire - dab a little flux on the wire & let a little flow
into the bead - place a small chip/snip of 'easy' or 'extra easy'
silver solder on the wire so it leans on the bead - direct a
smallish flame (away from the jewelry piece) at the base the solder
where it meets the wire but not directly on the bead - that should
melt the solder along the wire & into the ball - clip wire & polish
bead to match ball at other end.
