Little Torch vs. Meco Midget

Hi Rodney

I ask why are you runing your gas pressure so high the response was
that is where I like it! How can you help these people?

I guess I’m wondering why you feel you need to. They obviously have
enough experience to know they are not getting what they want from
their current product and looking for something that will provide
that condition or quality. What’s to fix or help with? People hold
pencils in different fashions, I don’t feel the need to correct them
to my method.

I am assuming they paid for the torches.

Bonnie,

I purchased this torch after struggling with my Smith Little Torch
on a very large silver piece. Personally, I think it's nice having
both torch options.

I was wondering if you had the rosebud tip for the Little torch.
That seems to be adequate for any large sterling work I do.

I have both a Little Torch and a Meco Midget. I bought the Meco four
or five years ago. I find I still use the Smith at least 90% of the
time. I have two complaints about the Meco and hopefully someone can
tell me what to do about them. The hoses which came with the torch
are stiff and heavy and make maneuvering the torch really awkward. I
notice there are so called “ultra light” hoses available but only for
use with oxy/acetelyne. Since I prefer propane that won’t work for
me. Does anyone know of a source for lightweight flexible hoses I can
use with propane? Although I know some people do, I’d rather not use
the clear plastic hoses available at most hardware stores.

Also, the torch has valve creep. It has had it since the first time I
used the torch. I set the flame the way I want it, get it in
position to do the job and the flame has changed and has to be
readjusted. I’m not talking about the initial change brought about by
enlargemant of the orifice when it initially heats up but later when
it’s been burning for a while. Any ideas?

Alan,

I’m thinking of getting one. I have two questions which I’m sure you
can answer, and that google was no help for:

1): How much silver or bronze can you melt with a Meco Midget torch?
(I’d be using propane, not natural gas)

2): Where do you get rose bud tips for the Meco Midget? What part
number are they?

It may or may not fix it, but make sure that the nuts under your
valve knobs - the ones that hold them to the torch body - are tight…

Regarding hoses for the Meco Midget, the green and red rubber hoses
are very heavy and awkward. We have replaced them with clear aquarium
hoses all around, so the torches feel much lighter in your hand. The
San Francisco fire marshal and Cal OSHA inspectors have both given it
the okay.

I have this with mine, too. I thought maybe there is a flaw in my
regulator, but, oddly, I’ve never tried to do anything about it.
I’ve just gotten used to it. But it’s a PITA. Didn’t experience it
at the Revere Academy with their Mecos, so it isn’t inevitable.

By the way, I recently finished my article on choosing a torch for
Art Jewelry-- before all this discussion, unfortunately. But on the
whole, it has all reinforced what I wrote in the piece. The point I
made in the article that has been most clearly underlined, though,
is that pretty much whatever torch you choose will work out fine,
once you get comfortable with it.

BTW, the article will not appear for a few months-- but you all
pretty much know everything that’s in it anyway.

I have used a meco for many years, and also had this problem at one
time. The cause was the oxygen regulator. I had the reg ulator
re-built at a welding supply shop and it solved the problem. You
might check that possibility.

My guess is 2 ounces of gold.

I am not sure.

Hi Jerry. Check out the hoses at tinmantech.com The ones for
acetylene will work fine, but will only last 7+ years versus 10 with
acetylene. They were working on propane versions, but I haven’t
checked lately. They are fantastic! I love my Midget, and with these
hoses, it’s just as maneuverable as a Little Torch.

I don’t have a hose problem. I do have the little torch, love the
quality and workablility.

I just received Romanoff’s 2007 blue book, they have a mini torch,
hoses, 5 tips for $79. You can see this catalogue on their website
