Life expectancy for files

And also, Leonardo DaVinci designed a helicopter too but I think
that took a little while before it was actually made?

Since files last as long as they last, and people often say something
like the above quote, I thought I’d take that quote - mostly by way
of conversation, plus it has always bothered me. DaVinci was a great
genius, not to mention a great artist. I’d put him and a few others
as the greatest min= ds of all time - in his own way I’d probably put
Abraham Lincoln on a fairly short list of that, too.

What DaVinci did NOT do was invent (or even design) the helicopter -
there’s quite a few other things it’s said of, too, that I can’t
recall offhand but I’ve seen. He conceptualized the idea of human
flight, yes. In much the same way H.G. Wells visualized space
flight, but he didn’t invent rocketry - Robert Goddard is considered
the father of that. Think of DaVinci in the same way - a science
fiction writer and visionary (aside from his true art
accomplishments). If Leonardo had know Newton’s laws of motion, it
would be a very different world, but he didn’t and couldn’t…

Not a rant, not a crusade, it just bothers when when people say such
things, and a lot of people do… Just by way of conversation,
really…

And that dating is why I thought it humerous to suggest Don was
not that old. And before you get too up in arms over the joke, I'll
note that there are plenty of mornings when I myself do feel every
bit that old too... When ya start to age, you get to joke about it,
ya know. Helps with some of the aches and pains.

Hey Peter…

I’m sharing that experience now…I live in a Northern climate,
too…

Everyone, sooner or later, will get to share that experience, or
something akin…[G]…!

Files are consumables in the industry, when they get dull, buy new
ones…trust me on this.

I go thru a set of diamond files in about 6 months with heavy
useage, a year if I really milk them.

Steel files are replaced more often for me. Althought, I will say
the Valtitan files (yellow tang) are holding up suprizingly well, im
going on almost 6 months with them, a bit of wear, but holding out
none the less. MUCH longer than the regular files I was using. I will
be replacing these soon.

Steel and Titanium are murder on these tools, so softer metals will
be much more forgiving and the investment will be worth it. I will
say, a set of the Valtitan files should last a very long time on
silver and gold…and they arent that much more money for the set, I
do wish they came in a finer cut.

Having seen a realized model of Da Vinci’s ‘helicopter’ at the
Museum of Flight in Seattle, Wa, I suggest you google “Da Vinci’s
Helicopter” where you will quickly find his drawings of his “helical
air screw” commonly referred to as Da Vinci’s helicopter. Direct
quote from Da Vinci follows.

“…I have discovered that a screw-shaped device such as this, if it
is wellmade from starched linen, will rise in the air if turned
quickly…” Leonardo Da Vinci - Codice Atlantico

A while back I bought a set of needle files at Sears. They are
Craftsman. Today I happen to see them and, with this thread in mind,
thought I’d check to see if they have the FULL UNLIMITED WARRANTY ON
CRAFTSMAN HAND TOOLS. They do. isn’t that convenient. The warranty
simply says “If this Craftsman hand tool ever fails to give complete
satisfaction, RETURN IT TO ANY SEARS STORE OR OTHER CRAFTSMAN OUTLET
and it will be replaced, free of charge.” (emphasis is Sears).

How can you beat that? When they get dull, take them back and get
new ones free of charge. I’ve used the Craftsman unlimited warranty
for other tools. No one has ever asked how the tool became the way it
is, they simply replace it with like item.

The needle file set I’m looking at is Sears Craftsman number 6757.

A company calculates the cost of offering a warranty based on a
number of estimates, including the expected number of substandard
products as well as the expected number of customers willing to
abuse the warranty. The cost of offering a warranty is included in a
product’s retail price. If warranty costs go up, then the retail
price of products will increase.

Sears has an unlimited warranty on everything they sell. If every
customer took your advice, and returned all the tools, shoes,
clothing, furniture, jewelry and everything else that has worn out
from use, then Sears would raise prices and possibly close stores,
putting some folks out of work.

If you don’t want people to abuse the warranty you offer on your
products, why would you encourage others to abuse someone else’s
warranty? Is it because Sears is a big company offering a generous
warranty, and therefore Sears must have plenty of money? Even the
giant retailers cannot absorb unlimited losses without it’s
resulting actions affecting customers and employees.

I remember when I was a kid my dad complaining about how cheap my
uncle was. When he needed to paint his house he would go to
Montgomery Wards (we used to call it Monkey Wards) and buy half as
much paint as he needed. Then go home and paint until he ran out of
paint. Then he would take the empty paint cans back to Montgomery
Wards and tell them it didn’t cover in one coat like the guarantee
says. They would mix him up another batch of paint and he would
finish painting his house. No wonder Wards went out of business…

Craftsmen used to be a quality hand tool and I have used their
replacement guarantee for socket wrenches but each time I get one
replaced the quality seems to be worse than before. If it weren’t for
the guarantee I might as well buy socket wrenches at Harbor Freight.
Disclaimer: I don’t make a living out of turning wrenches. I know
what professional mechanics tools cost and their quality. I’m just
tired of trying to change oil in my truck and my Sears Craftsman
socket wrench coming apart in my hand while I’m under my truck with
oil dripping on me. But when I go to Sears for the replacement
scowling, covered in used motor oil, and holding out my broken socket
wrench I usually get very prompt service.

The unlimited warranty does not apply to all products that Sears
sells. In fact, there are numerous Craftsman tools to which it does
not apply. The warranty applies primarily to Craftsman hand tools
such as wrenches, sockets, hammers, their needle files, and rakes,
shovels, clippers, brooms, trowels, pruners, hoses, sprinklers, hose
nozzles and other small gardening hand tools. Sears has had this
unlimited warranty in place since they started offering Craftsman
tools in 1927. I’m sure they’ve figured the cost of replacement in
their pricing and after 82 years I think you can feel comfortable
exercising that warranty. I certainly do.

Thank you Betty, for a reminder about integrity and honesty! a
little “do unto others”?

warranties are intended to prove the integrity of manufacturer and
seller to stand behind their products. Should we punish them for
that? Prices will go up and warranties down. the relationship
between buyer and seller becomes more adversarial.

respectfully to you, Betty!

Like Betty said about abusing a warranty, It’s not a good personal
habit. I personally won’t enter a Sears store unless I have to find
an exit from the mall, but I know many stories about Sears and their
business practices. And besides I haven’t fit into their clothing
sizes since I was a teenager, So, even though Craftsman brand tools
are good quality, unless I want to make a sinusoidal stake, I won’t
be bothering the Sears sales staff anytime soon. When I buy a file,
wear it out, and replace it, I pay for it.
