Does anyone know where I could learn to cut and polish stones? I’m
located in NYC, but could do a summer course elsewhere if there
aren’t classes locally. I’d be willing to take private lessons as
well.

You don’t say whether you mean cabochons or faceted, but either way,
among the most economical-- and fun-- places are Wild Acres or
William Holland. I’ve actually only been to the former, where I took
beginning faceting. Both places offer 1-week courses in beautiful
summer-camp-for-adults type settings, with volunteer instructors so
it is very cheap. I was at Wild Acres during hurricane Ivan…

Join a rock and mineral club that has a workshop. You will have
training and access to tools without the initial expense, and years
of experienced people to talk to. Go to the EFMLS site on the web for
a list in New York.
