Laser welding - shank a ring

I would like to ask those of you who have experience with laser
welding if it’s possible to half shank a ring with a laser. I have a
particular situation in mind: it’s a 14KY inlayed ring. The bottom
of the shank was too thin so a half shank was lasered to the inlayed
top. After a short time the ring fell apart where it had been
lasered. Is the lasering only a surface process so that when I
repolished I polished away the connection or was it not properly
lasered? I guess I don’t understand what happens to the metal join
in a case like this. Any help with an explanation? Thank you all for
your expertise and your williness to share. Kevin
