Hi Dan, A project very similar to this is described in Steve Midgett’s
book, Mokume Gane - A Comprehensive Study. In this case, he’s
inlaying mokume, rather than stainless, but I suspect the concept is
nearly identical. This is detailed in the project demonstration
section toward the rear of the book. You might want to see if you can
get your hands on a copy.

As a side note - this is one gorgeous book! I had to go through the
book a couple times just looking at the photos before I could do any
reading! A must for any decent metalsmithing library. Chocked FULL of
detailed technical including sections by other noted
mokume artisans who give their variations on the process.
