Jewellery Tour in Europe

Hi All

I am reposting this as it the message was lost during the recent
Hurricanes in the US.

I am travelling to Europe next year and would be intersted in
ganoskin members ideas of places to visit to see jewellery museums
etc.

I start out in Denmark, work through Germany (have Pforzheim on my
list), France & Italy and Turkey.

I am interested in museums, workshops, exhibitions, factory visits
etc.

Has anyone seen anything they recommend for another traveller? I am
basically free to go where I want. Only entry point and exit point
are confirmed at this stage.

I am taking my son with me who will get bored in no time so need to
space my tours out.

Hi Lise,

I am from Germany, I was born there, went to school and got my whole
art education in Munich. I also raised my two sons in Munich till we
moved to the US. So if you have any questions about where to go and
what to see and what to do with your son, please write me off list,
it would be too much for this forum.

Hi,

I would def. visit the Schmuckmuseum in Pforzheim
http://www.schmuckmuseum-pforzheim.de
And visit Idar-Oberstein (the lapidary center of Europe).

In Italy I would go to Torre del Grecco (near Napels) to see the
coral cutters. In Paris you ofcourse don’t want to miss the Louvre
(and “le petit louvre” orso… a mall-like building for antique
dealers with great jewellery… it lays opposite of the Carroussel
entrance of the Louvre if I remember correct).

Do not overlook a stop in Idar-Oberstein, Germany. There are museums
aplenty and these towns have been cutting gems and all kinds of rocks
for hundreds of years. You will find cut gems, agates, and sculptures
all over town.

I just looked at the website and the museum is currently closed for
renovations until the spring of 2006. They offer a smaller exhibit
in the basement until 8-Jan-06.

It is called “Le Louvre des Antiquaires” and is just off the Rue de
Rivoli (the street that runs alongside the Louvre). In that same
street you’ll also find the “Musee des Arts Decoratifs” which is
currently closed except their Jewelry gallery: an absolute “must-see”
(a history of jewelry, not very big but exceptionally well
presented). Also the gallery “Helene Poree” on the rue de l’Odeon is
specialized in contemporary jewelry.

In Munich: the Dammler Stiffung (contemporary jewelry) in the Museum
of contemporary Art In London the (big) Jewelry department at the
Victoria & Albert Museum is closed till 2008 !!!

Hi Linda,

It is called "Le Louvre des Antiquaires" and is just off the Rue
de Rivoli (the street that runs alongside the Louvre).

That was the name I was after indeed. I always seem to forget the
name, but never miss a visit when I’m in Paris.
