Interactive model

Revisiting the old subject.

Sometime ago, we had a discussion of hand-fabricaion versus modern
technology, and especially CAD/CAM.

At a time, I issued a challenge to attempt to reproduce the design, I
had used for my DVD “Eternity Ring”. As good as technology may be, I
believe that it will choke on design like this, but may be someone
proves me wrong.

There were some attempts, but apparently scanning of the design into
software was unsuccessful, due to some software issues.

I have had a couple of days recently, so I created a CAD model of the
design and placed it on my website.

The model is fully interactive and can be viewed from any angle and
direction. Whatever CAD/CAM system one is using, the model should
make a setup relatively painless, since all of the details are
clearly seen. The modeling itself is pretty straight forward. I hope
someone will give it another try and let us know how it comes out.

Hi Leonid,

  1. Is there a way to stop the spinning of your interactive ring at a
given point (e.g., in order to measure or to zoom in on a particular
spot?) What 3d apps do you use to model? To make the interactive
    presentation?

  2. Did you know that your web site forcibly changes the customized
display of (my) computer system to Windows 7 Basic? The windows
return to my customized scheme after closing the browser, but I need
to reboot to get my Desktop back to what it was. Very intrusive. Just
thought you’d like to know, as I have never had that with any other
site. (I have Windows 7 Home Premium)

Mr. Surpin,

Since no one else seems to have responded to your post - at least
not in the open forum - I will.

The model you posted is simple enough for any rapid prototype system
and could even be closely approximated by a CA milling system. Try
contacting this fellow in CA. He does all of my prototypes and is
very accommodating in making sure the customer is happy.

The model has built in constant motion. It moves on itself, or you
can manipulate it with the mouse. Measurement controls is not
useful. It will not give real measurements. It has to do with
translation into pixels and they are different on each and every
device.

Zoom work fine. There is a control panel under model. Default is on
turning, but if you want to move or to zoom, just click on
appropriate control.

As far as 3D apps it is slightly complicated. The model is built as
regular CAD model. Than it is exported as VRML model. VRML is the
language similar to HTML, but it is used for 3D web graphics. The
model is imported into Strata Live, where it is prepared to be
exported into Strata server, which encodes it. The actual language
is Java.

That is very strange. I am using mac to do all the work. I wonder if
it has to do with version of the java that is enabled on your
browser. Try to use different browser, or may be upgrade to the most
recent version of Java.
