Insurance for importing metals from Columbia

#1

Hello folks,

I’m trying to find insurance for fed ex shipments of gold and
platinum from Columbia to Oregon. I normally use Parcel Pro for all
my insurance but they won’t cover Columbia. Fed Ex will only cover a
package up to $500 and with each package costing about $40 it would
get very expensive to ship say several ounces of gold - one ounce or
so at a time. Of course I can gamble and have them ship $800 per
package - take the chance that I’ll lose $300 if the package
disappears. But that could be pretty expensive too.

Any companies other than Parcel Pro that you’d recommend?

Thanks,
Mich

mich,

ever thought of just buying a plane ticket down and transfering the
gold yourself?

is their coverage different for shipment within central america? i’d
be willing to bring it up to you, (i’m in costa rica) but i don’t
return to the states until feb . . .

also check out UPS and DHL, they are both popular here in Costa
Rica, don’t know if it’s the same for columbia.

Call FedEx and ask about their DVX program this is a insurance that
will cover up to $50,000 per package. I don’t know if they will
cover goods from Columbia but it is worth a try.

Thanks Jocelyn, I did think about flying there myself and if I could
afford to buy 20 ounces or so at a time it would probably be worth
it. And thanks for your offer to deliver it. I expect I’ll be
purchasing on an ongoing basis. DHL won’t ship gold or platinum at
all. UPS is the same as Fed Ex max insurance per package is $500.

thanks,
Mich

Mich,

Fed EX will insure packages for up to $50,000 but you must sign up
for their DVX program. Call your Fed Ex account representative and
ask about it. I don’t know about Columbia but ask the acct. rep.

I’m curious: Why are you importing metals from Columbia? Is the
price differential great enough to deal with all the difficulties.

Jim, thanks I did check out the DVX program and it’s definitely good
to know about. They don’t however cover Columbia. Mich

Hi Tas, you can check out my new site http://www.eco-gold.net I’m
importing from Columbia because the Green Gold Corporation there is
selling gold and platinum that is certified to be sustainably mined
/ fair trade material. Same kind of idea as fair trade coffee. I
think it’s well worth the trouble - even if I have to get my two
ounces of platinum split into 3 separate packages to have fedex
insure it.

actually you could just go to their site
http://www.greengold-oroverde.org to find out more about what their
doing.

FedEx has insurance partners from whom you can buy insurance for
values over their $500 limit for domestic ground shipments. I don’t
know if they do the same thing for international shipments or if
precious metals would be covered, but it might be worth a call to
FedEx to find out.
