Hello Skip, The teachers teach metrics and English systems. I taught
6th grade and now high school science. I used the English system of
fractions which leads nicely into algebra. Remember solving for
variables? Yuck! Metrics is harder for many students because there
are so many names in so many types of measure. They don’t associate
the name with the decimal equivalent. If they use it every day then
it will become second nature. Industry is holding back. Carpet by
the square yard, gallons of milk or paint. Hardware stores now carry
both systems to work with old and new products. Jewelers’ gem stones
and weights are metric. The pharmacists medications are metric or IS.
Students leave school with a working knowledge of metrics, but run
into a world of the English system when they work and live in the US.
