How to get smoothest bezels

Hi Judy - As to bezel height over the stone, the best setting I have
ever done was due to a hint from a wonderful Taos jewler - Marilyn
Nicholson. Her way is to do somethign like Frank Gross said - make
the part over the stone as SMALL as you can adn them burnish it over
the top bevel of the stone - this is almost a misstatement, because
there is so little metal above the stone, you are hardly ‘burnishing
over’. It is very neat, bcause you have virtually no metal on top of
the stone to mess up. Ivy -

Hopefully this thread will accommodate the following problem;
Trying to make a bezel for a heart shaped blue Topaz Briolette
stone…That is, a heart shaped stones that is basically flat on both
sides but is facetted on both sides. so the edges are clean. How do
I shape a bezel to the stone, and solder it without breaking the
stone. never done a bezel on a large stones… this stone is 112 ct large!!!..

Jim, You might check with Steve Green, a dedicated Orchidian, fellow
rock-nut and an all-round decent guy. steve@briolettes.com or
www.briolettes.com He has a beautiful web site full of briolettes,
does custom work for people such as yourself, and has a full set of
‘HowTo’ type on his site. I would love to see a photo of
the mighty 112ct whopper you have landed.
