Hi-tech adhesive for opal

Hi Folks,

In some recent discussions about saving opal triplets that had become
detcahed, I believe it was Anthony Lloyd-Rees who brought up the
subject of high tech adhesives now being used for opal doublets and
triplets.

Can anyone tell me what these are, how they are better, and where can
I get 'em?

The reason for the question is that I’ve just gotten a pile of
ammolite rough to be cut and made into doublets.

Cheers,

Hello Hans,

UV curing epoxy at least dental quality is the answer. This stuff
isn’t cheap so it behooves you to prepare a number of pieces for each
batch you mix. The easiest source is naturally your dentist if you
don’t have a dental supply house handy. The stuff I have is slightly
milky when mixed but is quite transparent in a composite. Any glue
that can withstand the environment and abuse that eating provides
will easily provide a lifetime guaranteed bond in normal jewellery
use.
