Gaspeite

#1

I’ve just bought my first small cabs of gaspeite so I’m very
interested in this discussion. I just love the color! More
info, please! Gini

For your consideration I have attached the MSDS for Iron, Nickel
Carbonate & Magnesium Carbonate. Nickel CO3 is the only one to
really worry about it looks like, except for the fire hazard
associated with Iron. Information came from
http://www.chem.utah.edu/MSDS/msds.html

Hello All, Does Gaspeite contain cadmium? Should it be cut with
extreme caution?

We found Gaspeite ~4 years ago in Tucson and were informed by some
cutters there that it was heavy with cadmium. It should be cut with
extreme care and caution. A number of those we spoke to refused to
cut it at all. Based on this info we passed also.

We watched piles of it being unloaded from a semitrailer and while
the guys unloading it weren’t in hazmat suites they seemed to be
taking no chances - they had dust masks, heavy chemical gloves upto
to their elbows, knee high rubber boots, nylon overalls and jackets.
They said that they had been told not to handle it with bare hands.
It wasn’t cold and none of the guys unloading other trailers were
dressed this way.

It seems to be very popular now. I’ve searched the internet
(including Orchid archives) and found nothing to suggest that
Gaspeite requires more than the normal cautions one should take
cutting rocks.

Does anyone know for sure?

Thanks in advance,
Karen Dave’

#4

Karen - Gaspeite is a nickel mineral, and should be treated with
some caution as a result. I’ve cut some with no more than elementary
precautions (the same I use for malachite) and had no difficulties.

#5

Gaspeite rough is even scarcer than cut stoens and beads. The rumor
I hear is that it is all out of the ground.

For beads try
Steven Maldin (exhibits at Tucson in Rodway rooms)
Sunwest in Albuquerque (might have cabs, too)
Thomasson Stone Supply in Albuquerque
Anderson Trading in Gallup / Vanderwagon NM

They’d all be listed in the 2004 Tucson guide or the on line
version.
