First off, you have seen the announcements for the Ganoksin Raffle.
As the organizer, this is always a labor of love for me, recognizing
and honoring those donors who participate because they believe in the
power of of this group. I urge you, not only to support them, but to
also purchase a ticket. There are some amazing prizes out there and
the odds are very high in your favor of winning something.
All the prizes are transferable. If you win and you think that your
prize would suit another jeweler, organization or that special
someone, you are allowed to give the gift of giving.
Participation is open worldwide!
Purchasing a ticket for someone in their name is a great stocking
stuffer. I know you are all busy, but we also have come to rely on
Orchid and Ganoksin every day. Ganoksin is free to everyone who
chooses to search the archives for find a supplier,
purchase a book, see others studios and so much more. The supporters
of the raffle go the extra mile because they believe in this family.

2008. It might seem far away, but here it is December already! Tucson
is right around the corner. The past winners who are at the Orchid
Dinner on Fright night, Feb. 8 and myself will announce the winner

I'm a beginner craftsperson. Over the past years, Ganoksin has
helped me out of many binds. This has included learning how to
cure stumps, saving the patina on copper, and tips on soldering.
As a result, I purchased a raffle ticket to support the site that
has given me so much. The list of prizes was tantalizing and I
daydreamed about winning. When I heard Karen and Hanuman's voices
on my voicemail I proceeded to dance a jig around the kitchen and
my family thought I had finally lost it.
My studio is very modest and sparse, so winning the gift
certificates for tools has allowed me to try new techniques and
expand my skills. The first of the prizes to arrive was the
Foredom Flex shaft. I had been making do with a really cheap
knockoff; it is amazing the difference a quality tool makes. JNB
studio sent me the entire set of instructional engraving DVDs.
The Gesswein and Otto Frei gift certificates were used to buy an
engraving ball and gravers and I am in the process of learning to
become an expert engraver. I have not produced anything museum
worthy yet but I'm working on it. The McCinnon Global
certificates bought a Foredom bench polishing lathe. The Rio gift
certificate bought something I have been drooling over for years,
the Bill Fretz anvil set. My studio is now overflowing with an
array of awesome new equipment that I experiment with daily.
As luck would have it, I live in the Boston area and am a
current student at Metalwerx so a gift certificate there was
especially welcome. I learned the art of chasing on a vessel from
Valentin Yatkov. Registration to the Clasp conference in Denver
put on by Rio was also included, what a fabulous informative
time! I had three days of sharing with wonderful,
creative people, learning about marketing and new ways to open
creative channels and I came home with my creative juices
recharged and new ideas about how to streamline my work flow and
market my jewelry.
Winning the Ganoksin raffle has completely transformed my studio
from a bare bones space to one teaming with fun tools to play
with. It has been a year of wonderful surprises and awesome
creative experiences. I would like to thank everyone who
contributed to the Ganoksin raffle for the generosity.

Bob Rush is a self-taught lapidary residing in San Jose, CA. He
began his lapidary adventure at a young age when his uncle introduced
him to the techniques of cutting and polishing the local agates found
in Southern Oregon. In the nearly 50 years since, he has expanded and
refined his lapidary skills to include work on many varied projects
including assembled stones such as opal doublets and triplets,
freeform cabs, very large color cabochons and some stone carving.
He continues to search for rare and unique cutting rough with
distinct patterns and features that are both typical and unusual for
that particular material. These patterns are his focus for rare and
unique high quality cabochons for the jewelry artists’ special design
needs. These patterns and features often dictate the final shape for
the cabochon thus they will not be cut to the generally accepted
commercial sizes and shapes.

Gesswein

One of Ganoksin’s regular supporters, Gesswein offers a shopping
spree for anything in their catalog.
Since 1914, Gesswein is one the industry leaders in the jewelry tool
business. Elaine Corwin in Technical Support was one of the first
supporters of the Ganoksin Raffle. Gesswein has an excellent sales
staff and are always helpful to any jeweler no matter where you are
in your career.
On their website, they have an interesting story of Gesswein’s
history. Here is an excerpt.
About Gesswein:
“To our friends and patrons, greetings. Prompted by a universal
demand from our friends, and strongly feeling the need of a book that
would be a work of standard value on tools and supplies=8A we have,
with the characteristic spirit of our house, spared neither labor nor
expense in producing a catalogue that will be a benefit to every
buyer and workman in the line.”
So began an early Gesswein catalog offered at a time when all work
was painstakingly crafted and finished entirely by hand. Compared to
the present, considering current manufacturing knowledge and
production supplies and equipment, those early days were hazardous
and inefficient. Many techniques were unsafe and exposed the workers
to highly toxic chemicals. The machinery that was available was
powered by pulley or, at best, by gas or steam generators.
How we came to be here, back in 1914, is truly an American success
story. The father of our company, Paul H. Gesswein, was born in
Germany. One of the youngest in a family of 18 children, he came to
America with his father and some of his younger siblings when he was
in his early teens.
His arrival in this country typified the struggle that immigrants
faced in becoming self-sufficient. As a teenager, Paul took a job
working in a hardware store. Young Paul found that he had many
requests from nearby craftsman for precision tools, mainly for
manufacturing jewelry. Recognizin= g an opportunity, he decided to
start his own business. He began by importing European tools
(primarily from Germany) because American-made products were rare or
nonexistent. Initially, Paul’s customers were local; they visited the
store to make their purchases. As time went on, however, Paul
decided t= o visit customers outside the New York City area and began
traveling by steamer between New York and Boston. As people heard
about his precision tools, requests from other parts of the country
were received. That’s when Paul decided to produce a book of tools
and supplies that he could mail to those customers who couldn’t visit
his store - and the first Gesswein catalog was born!
