Fixing a Large Bezel

Hi everyone,

Help! I have a very important, one a kind design that the bezel seat
was cut too large for the 12mm round facetted citrine center stone.
It is a partial bezel that covers about 300 degrees of the stone
edge. The bezel wall is shared with a graduated channel of small
diamonds (13) that are already set 300 degrees around the center
stone. I am unable to fold the bezel wall over the stone because the
diameter of the seat is just too big to fold over the girdle and if
its is forced to fold, the channels with be displaced. Does anyone
have any tips for repairing this bezel to fit without replacing the
stone, setting, or altering the channel? Any ideas will be
appreciated.

Fit the stone down into the seat as is, so it sits properly supported
and positioned on the seat. Then fabricate a wire that will fit
snugly into that bezel wall, above the girdle of the stone, and with
it’s lower surface fitted reasonably well to the stone. That, when
inserted over the stone, can be laser welded to the bezel wall,
creating an already set bezel. If the weld is then built up a bit,
the whole can then be leveled off again, and the inside edge of the
bezel finished the same as it would have been if actually set the
usual way. If you don’t have your own access to a laser welder,
there are no doubt a number of helpful Orchidians who’d be willing to
be your subcontractor for that task…

How much too big is the bezel? If you have enough room you might be
able to insert a new bezel after shaving down the original. Will
the setting take some heat?
