Extra Long mandrel for flex shaft

Hi all,

I’m working on a large scale project and have run into a problem. I
am at the sanding and polishing stage on a piece that has an “L-like”
90 degree angle as part of the design. I am using silicone points and
knife polishers and polishing pins on a flex shaft (Foredom fitted
with a # 30 handpiece) but I just can’t get close enough to the
inside angle of the “L” without the handpiece of the flex shaft
getting in the way. If only the mandrel was several mm longer! I
thought of inserting a long screw into the flex shaft and threading
the silicone polisher onto the screw. Does anyone know of if extra
long mandrels are available or how best to accomplish this task?
Thanks.

Hi Alice,

You might want to take a look at the Foredom #18 handpiece. It’s
aprox 15 mm in diameter at the widest part & tapers to aprox 7 mm at
the end… With a handpiece of this diameter you should will be able
to get into the corner.

Thanks Dave! I was able to get it in a bit closer to the angle when I
switched to a #20 handpiece and used a 3-M micro finishing (1200
grit) sanding disc which I bent slightly, followed by hand finishing.
I will definitely check out the #18 handpiece.
