Enlarging plain platinum ring

#1

Hello all, I have a question about enlarge a plain platinum ring
about 2 sizes bigger and the ring is thick, can you tell me how to
go about it and I don’t have the tool to do. Can I annul it then put
on the ring marnet and hammer it to the right size?

Thank you for your advices.

Well, Anna, from all that you say I’d suggest that you refuse the job
and refer them to a platinum-qualified goldsmith. Yes, you could bang
it up the mandrel eventually. That’s going to thin the ring
considerably and give you a huge polishing job. Just the filings are
likely going to be worth around $100. That may sound good, but that’s
the customer’s platinum we’re talking about. What you ask ~can~ be
done, but it’s not how it ~should~ be done.

2 sizes is a bit much for a band, platinum or otherwise, to just tap
up or stretch. Your going to have to add a section in. An
experienced platinum smith will need to do it, especially to keep it
seamless. (1700 C Plat solder). It’s dangerous to do unless you have
a decent set of welding goggles, at least a number 7. If I were you,
I’d pass. This is from a guy who has specialized in platinum work for
over 30 years. It ain’t easy.
