[Enamel Bits] Tracing designs onto enameled surface

Hello all: I have just returned from teaching a beginning cloisonne
enameling workshop. During the course of the workshop I found one of
my students had difficulty in transferring the design onto the metal.
For example, she had her wires bent on top of her original design,
but when it came time to place the wires onto her flux coated silver
piece she lost the design.

Therefore, I am looking for ideas on tracing the design right onto
the enameled surface and burns out without harming the enamel. Since
this is cloisonne on silver the design would be traced on a clear
flux coat of enamel. I have heard that carbon paper may work for this
purpose.

Any ideas would be of a great help. Thanks in advance.

Also, I did want to mention the school that I taught the workshop at
for those of you who are looking for jewelry training. The school is
located in Carmichael, Ca, near Sacramento, and is called the
California Institute of Jewelry Training. (I believe they have
another school near L.A.) I was able to meet most of the instructors
who teach the bench jeweler training courses and found everyone warm,
welcoming, professional and well educated in the jewelry trade. A
school I would highly recommend.

You can visit their web site at www.jewelrytraining.com I wanted to
add a disclaimer: The only way I am connected with the facility is
enameling workshops on occasion.(no I am not receiving a kickback
from the school for mentioning them) I have taken classes at other
schools and facilities but this school really impressed me and I
don’t believe many people know about it.

Linda, I don’t know if this will help, depends on the colors used in
the cloisonne piece…In my last class, I had my students stick the
wires down with Thompson’s Blue Stick and then fill directly into the
cells, we were using mostly blue/green/purple, but I keep the chart
from an old “Glass On Metal” handy…the one detailing which
reds/pinks/oranges get good results on fine. Skipping the “flux it
first” step cut down on frustration and the wires stayed in place
beautifully.
