Earrings - How heavy is too heavy?

I think my biggest earrings are about 8.5 grams (each side, not for
the pair) and were made at least in part to mock the fashion for
overly large earrings. They are wearable for an evening, if you have
short hair and no collar, as I said I made them mostly to amuse
myself I think we are all allowed a couple of those a year…
especially in silver. Anyway a friend wanted a pair of something
similar but can’t wear heavy earrings, could I try to make them match
the weight of her favourite earrings?

“Ummm okay, lets weight those and see what they are.” I put one on
the scale… I put the second one on so the weight would
register… “riiiiiiight, so that weight give or take a couple of
grams?” One of these days maybe I’ll figure out some way of making
little silver helium balloons so I can offer her earrings on the take
side of that scale. Yeeeeesh.

Leonid,

This is a very strange statement. Weight restriction is an
absolute must in the earring design. In this thread the discussion
of the maximum weight should not be taken as a license to create
overly heavy earrings.

Just a little insight. Dennis treats that pierced hole, and the post
merely as positional features much like aligning two pieces of metal
together with a dowel pin. They will relocate time and time again
into the same position and in a predictable way. He does not in my
opinion design earrings for pierced ears with an omega back as a
safety mechanism, he designs clip on earrings that happen to have a
post for pierced ears. What this enables him to achieve, and very
effectively I might add, is re-distribute the load or the weight
across a broader area of the lobe through the use of and in my
opinion, ingenious holding mechanisms he designed himself. Not at any
point in time is there any load or stress on that pierced hole. By
directing the load over a wider area, the weight actually diminishes
to the point where it now becomes practical and wearable.

To understand the logic, you have to know the man

Best Regards.
