Again, thanks, to all who had imput on this subject. I combined several of
the instructions, came up with a workable method for me, and made my first
posts from 20 gauge wire this afternoon. I feel like a professional!!!

Ann, For increased strength and durability, it’s sometimes worth
using white gold posts on substantially sized silver earrings.
As others have mentioned, drilling a small seat for the post before
soldering really helps as does work-hardening a silver post after it
is soldered. Go around it from the top with a parallel pliers and
gently squeeze from all positions, being careful not to flatten it.
Polish as usual.
